Volunteer Training Begins September 15th- Sign Up Today!
At YWCA Missoula, we know that lasting change happens when community members step forward to support one another. Survivors of domestic and sexual violence often turn to us in their most difficult moments—seeking safety, compassion, and a path forward. Volunteer Advocates are at the heart of this work, offering critical support when it’s needed most.
This fall, we’re offering a free, in-depth Volunteer Advocate Training that will prepare you to stand alongside survivors with empathy, expertise, and confidence. Over the course of six weeks, you’ll gain the tools to make a meaningful impact in our community while learning from experienced staff and guest trainers. Sign up for the training here.
What Volunteer Advocates Do
Advocates serve survivors in many different ways, including:
-
Answering calls on our 24/7 crisis line
-
Welcoming and supporting families in our domestic violence shelter
-
Offering a listening ear in our walk-in counseling center
-
Connecting people with community resources and safe housing
Whether it’s providing comfort during a moment of crisis or helping someone take the first steps toward healing, advocates play a vital role in ensuring that no survivor has to face their journey alone.
What You’ll Learn
The training covers a wide range of topics to prepare you for this important role, including:
-
Historical trauma, cultural competence, and serving Native populations
-
Supporting children and youth in crisis
-
Domestic violence, sexual assault, and housing program overviews
-
Managing vicarious trauma and practicing self-care
-
Crisis de-escalation and active listening
-
Racial justice and addressing systemic barriers
-
Confidentiality, advocate privilege, and mandatory reporting
By the end, you’ll be ready to serve survivors with both compassion and confidence.
Training Schedule
The Volunteer Advocate Training takes place Monday and Wednesday evenings, 6–8 PM, beginning September 15 and running through October 27 (no training on October 13 in honor of Indigenous Peoples Day).
